AKUSHITSUNA is a café in central Kyiv, conceived as a minimalist space with references to Japanese design. Rather than relying on literal interpretations of traditional Japanese motifs, the interior translates its principles through proportion, materiality, simplicity, and restraint.
One of the client’s key requirements was to emphasize the ascetic character of the space and the expressive quality of its technical solutions. The material palette is deliberately concise: natural wood is combined with stainless steel, tile, and technical finishes. Exposed structural and functional elements become part of the interior aesthetic, while vintage furniture adds character to the minimalist environment.
The café is divided into two zones with distinct atmospheres. The first is bright and open, with a more conventional seating arrangement. The second, with no access to natural light, is more intimate and comfortable: different seating configurations and multiple sources of local lighting create a sense of depth and privacy.
Low-level seating, natural materials, restrained forms, and careful attention to scale reference Japanese principles of spatial design without reproducing them literally. The resulting interior balances austerity and comfort, with its atmosphere shaped primarily by material, light, proportion, and functional details.
